Mode of operation:

In the case of eddy-current brakes and clutches, the torque is directly transmitted by electro-dynamic forces. The brakes or clutches consist of two parts each, the coil shell and the armature ring which are concentrically supported. When direct current is applied to the excitation coil, a magnetic field is generated the lines of force of which close via the salient poles of the coil shell, the small air gap and the armature ring. There is no mechanical contact at all. If both clutch halves are turning at different speeds (slip), eddy currents are generated in the armature ring which cause a braking respectively driving torque. The torque size is dependent on the coil excitation and the slip speed. Eddy-current brakes correspond in respect of layout and mode of operation to eddy-current clutches, with the coil shell of the eddy-current brake being stationary.

When the brakes and clutches are loaded, they are immediately warmed up, simultaneously causing a torque drop.
